End of 2020 + Goals for the New Year

Updated: Feb 1

Cheers, Y’all! it’s almost 2021!!

The LONGEST year that's ever been is finally just about over. Being the Type-A weirdo that I am, you’d think that I’d have a list of goals for the New Year, however, I tend to actually stick to just one goal a year. This year, I thought I’d try to choose just one word to focus on over the next year. I figured after the dumpster-fire of a year that 2020 was, I shouldn’t get my hopes too high when it comes to goal setting. I really wanted my one word to encapsulate everything that I want to do in 2021 while also being simple enough to actually accomplish and fit into my daily life.

To determine my 2021 Word of the Year, I first tried looking at all of the positive things that came out of 2020 as well as what I’m looking forward to in 2021. I did that by going through my photos month by month and picking out things that I did or accomplished that made me feel good.

After looking at the year in photos and memories, 2020 didn't seem to be so daunting and traumatic as it seemed at first. There were actually small sparks of joy within all of these months of isolation and confusion and, even if some days were harder than others - those small moments keep me moving forward.

Then, I thought about the upcoming year and how even with a vaccine out now, things will still not be the same as things were in 2019 or before for a long, long time. We have another disconcerting year to stomach, yet again. But, like the year we're putting behind us, there must be small sparks of joy in the upcoming year too, right?

Things I’m Looking Forward To in 2021

  • Martin and I’s 5th Wedding Anniversary - March 2021!

  • The Vaccine so we can resume some sort of normalcy

  • One of my best friends’ Twins’ 2nd Birthday

  • Outdoor Galentines Party (pending COVID)

  • Being President of MHAA

  • Continuing my blog, the Extra and my law firm, Fergus & Tomanka, PLLC

One of my biggest joys this year has been creating content for the Extra and hearing from you guys!! It has been a bright, fun spot in my life - when family law has been really, really hard and intense this year. I can't tell you what it means to me that you follow along. I love doing the Extra and I hope I get to continue it in the future + hope you join me!

I want to be more intentional with family and friends and reach out more. I have the worst habit of getting into these work-modes where I just put my head down and work, work, work for weeks at a time and forget time passes. I really need to soak up all the time that I have with those around me and those that I love.

  • I really need to put my laptop down and go visit my best friend and her twins on the other side of town more.

  • I need to write notes to Martin’s grandmother (who LOVES writing notes and cards) or call her more. I need to call my own grandparents more.

  • I need to be more intentional with my husband and our marriage. It can get crazy working and living together an putting the romance back into things and being intentional is incredibly important for a healthy marriage.

No one is promised another day and we all have the time now to slow down and just connect. What's the worst that could happen?
