If you're struggling with, or have a child/family member struggling with, a skin condition – you are all too aware of the laundry detergent you use and how toxic some big name brands can be for your skin. Your skin is your biggest organ – and we should treat it appropriately. We don’t abuse our kidneys or our liver the way we do our skin and we do it every day without even noticing it. What you put on your skin matters!

Many laundry detergents contain toxic chemicals (like 1,4-dioxane, a potential carcinogen), preservatives, and artificial fragrances and dyes, all of which can aggravate the skin, according to experts. This is obviously especially true for those who have a history of eczema or skin allergies. Experts also say that overdoing it on detergent is another factor that can lead to an adverse reaction. Using too much can cause the detergent to become stuck between the fibers of the fabric which then come into direct contact with the skin as you wear the clothing. If you have a high-efficiency washing machine, you really want to make sure you're only using the amount of detergent recommended.

To easily guide you to what brands you can safely use for your sensitive-skin laundry needs, I've put together the following guide on eco-friendly/vegan products for you to use.

The Laundress Cashmere & Wool Cleaner.

To see how to use the Cashmere and Wool Cleaner as well as how to care for your specialty fabrics when the colder season is over, check out last month’s post on cashmere and wool care.

The Laundress Stain Remover.

Next month, I’’ll be covering how to use the Stainer Remover to clean suede and silk fabrics. Be sure to check back! But, this guy is THE best and top of the market when it comes to cleaning silk. Just remember not to dry silk - ever! Always hang it to dry.

Dropps Laundry Pods

What Is It: Cruelty free, HE Compatible, Third Party Lab Tested, no artificial dyes in the formula and comes in completely sustainable packaging.

For Use On: removing odors and stubborn stains, keeping fabrics smelling fresh, and helping colors stay bold and bright. It’s the normal go-to around here now.

Review: Works well! And smells pretty good too.

Dropps Fabric Freshener Pods

What Is It: Cruelty free, HE Compatible, Third Party Lab Tested, no artificial dyes in the formula and comes in completely sustainable packaging.

For Use On: The Fabric Freshener is a natural, mineral-based fabric softener that maintains the wicking performance of athletic wear, and helps towels stay absorbent.

Review: Using too much fabric freshener can clog your washing machine, so I like that these come in pods so I know I'm using the right amount each time.

Puracy Stain Remover

What is it: The unique plant-based formula quickly dislodges stains, eliminates odors, removes residue, and leaves your fabric clean and fresh — all while being a gentle and renewable solution. Developed by doctors that safely removes grass, berries, blood, sweat, oil, tomato sauce, cosmetics, pet accidents, dirt, and hundreds of other stains and odors.

For Use On: Color-safe formula works great on clothing, linens, carpets, floor mats, car seats, cloth diapers, and other washable fabrics.

Review: This does work well on stains - I even used it on my rug when my cat threw up on it a few months back and it brought back the white in the rug! I was very surprised about the power packed into this innocent looking bottle.

The below items I got at the same eco-friendly store - ECOccasion.

Why? It’s mission is to contribute to solving the planet's environmental challenges by funding scholarships for students studying sustainable design and manufacturing. Cool, huh? Not only can you buy clean and all-natural at ECOccasion, but part of the proceeds go back to funding scholarships. Love it!
